Great Companies: How did you get your idea or concept for the business? Deepak Kumar Singh: I served with various organizations between 1994 and 2016. My last job with Honeywell lasted over 13 years. In Honeywell, Business Continuity was an integral part of my job profile. Herein, at a very nascent stage, the realization with respect to the ever-increasing importance and enormity of the twin domains of Business Continuity and Resiliency, set in. I found these domains extremely interesting and was able to visualize, correlate, plan and execute Business Continuity models for a number of practical scenarios within Honeywell. The fact that I was able to utilize the theoretical policies, guidelines and SOPs to implement Business Continuity in Honeywell’s operations, quite effectively and efficiently, gave me immense confidence and satisfaction. Once the ISO 22301 BCMS Standard certification was obtained for Honeywell, the next logical question staring me was - WHAT NEXT? Continuing with Honeywell would have been a cakewalk. It would have merely entailed regular monitoring, maintenance and time to time updating of the already established model; implying working within the confines of my comfort zone. For someone who thrived on picking-up challenges, it was this feeling of not being challenged enough, this prospect of getting stagnated that was utterly discomforting. In pursuit of newer horizons, greater challenges, and further growth, I decided in January 2016 to venture out, explore the immense possibilities of these rapidly expanding domains and use my repertoire of knowledge, skill and expertise to help other professionals and organizations. After due deliberations and numerous brainstorming sessions, I decided to take a plunge into the field of GOvernance, RISk and COmpliance to take care of risks, compliance, business continuity and resiliency requirements of organizations, companies and conglomerates looking at establishing cutting edge policies and operations. Notwithstanding, in view of the availability of minimal funds and meagre resources at my disposal; and keeping enormity of the task in mind, I gave myself a time period of 3 years. If, by then, I don’t see a light at the other end, I would revert to jobs. I’m not a sales and marketing kind of guy. My introverted temperament came across as a big challenge. How do I sell? How do I reach out to people? How do I tell them what do I do or what all can I do? I started pushing myself to shed my inhibitions and to become proactive. Very soon I was talking to people and reaching out to whosoever was willing to listen. Initial opportunities came through people who knew me and had immense faith in my capabilities and expertise. Good work does have the habit of announcing itself to the world! So, word of mouth recommendations, referrals, goodwill and recognitions followed, working wonders for us; and by the grace of Almighty, this amazing trend continues till date. Jessica Anvar: Starting a business from scratch presented a significant challenge for me, and I was forced to confront a great deal of self-doubt in the early stages. To get my firm off the ground, I secured a modest loan of just a few thousand dollars, but for the first couple of years, I struggled to generate much income. As someone based in Los Angeles, where costs can be exorbitant, I found myself questioning whether I had made the right decision to strike out on my own, as the road to success was proving to be difficult. Being an entrepreneur can be a solitary journey, rife with missteps, risks, and failures that can wear away at one's confidence. However, I remained steadfast in my determination to achieve my goals and realize my vision. Through unwavering perseverance, I stayed focused on my objectives, knowing that success would be mine if I refused to give up and continued to forge ahead. I learned valuable lessons from this experience, including the importance of maintaining confidence in oneself, tackling challenges head-on, and refusing to quit, even in the face of adversity. These lessons have stayed with me throughout my journey as an entrepreneur and have been integral to my continued success. Great Companies: How do you plan to grow in the future? What does 5 years down the line look like for The Lemon Law Experts? Jessica Anvar: We have quite a bit in store for these next 5 years. In the past 5, our firm has doubled in size, and we have plans to continue growing in the future. As we move forward, we aim to continue expanding our reach and assisting even more California consumers struggling with defective vehicles. Our ultimate goal is to empower these individuals with knowledge about their rights and the relief options available to them. We recognize that the road ahead may be challenging, given the recent legislative challenges facing California's Lemon Law. As such, we have set additional objectives for the next five years: to protect the state's Lemon Law and safeguard consumers' access to legal remedies. We believe that by achieving these goals, we can continue making a meaningful difference in the lives of countless consumers across California. Great Companies: If you had one piece of advice to someone just starting out, what would it be? Jessica Anvar: Starting a law firm can be an exciting, but challenging endeavour. If you want to succeed in a highly competitive market, you need to be willing to put in a lot of hard work and dedication. One important aspect of building a leading law firm is to have a relentless focus on your goals and a willingness to go above and beyond what others are doing. You cannot expect to stand out from the crowd if you are only doing the bare minimum or following the status quo. Instead, you need to be obsessed with your business and constantly looking for ways to improve and innovate. This means that you may need to work longer hours and sacrifice some of your personal time to make your law firm thrive. While I don't recommend neglecting your health and relationships outside of work, I do believe that a certain level of obsession and commitment is necessary to achieve exemplary results if you are starting a law firm today. For instance, you might need to work late at night or on weekends to meet a deadline or respond to a client's urgent request. You might need to brainstorm ideas with your team during your vacation or attend networking events on your days off. Do not neglect maintaining a healthy work-life balance where you can. As you grow your firm, you'll need to delegate some of the tasks and responsibilities to your staff and partners so that you can focus on high-level strategy and leadership.
