Tim and I met on a military base in Kenya, producing a series of films to training films for NGO staff in conflict zones. We quickly developed a great working relationship which has since involved working across award winning TV shows, filming some of the UKs biggest theatre shows and masses of marketing content. - Bal Gill - Director of Balfort Legal
Great Companies: Please tell me something about the business and how did you come up with such an idea? Bal Gill: After working as a barrister intermediary for a company in central London I suddenly found myself being made redundant. I loved my job and was unsure what to do as a next step. While searching for a new role, I realised I had the knowledge and motivation to go it alone, so I took the risk and set up my own legal consultancy business. Everyone’s business means a lot to them but it goes a lot deeper for me as I grew up with uncertainty. This isn’t something I wanted other families or my own children to experience and that is how Balfort Legal came about. Having the desire and drive to assist and ensure others are protected now and for the future. Great Companies: What are the various services and products provided by your company? Bal Gill: Our Estate Planning services including Wills, Trusts, Lasting Powers of Attorney & Probate services. We are also working with another company to bring a new product on the market. This new product allows any client have access to private healthcare, estate planning, financial advice, conveyancing, family law and an online file cabinet to store documents. This also includes a 24-hour bereavement helpline. Great Companies: Why should one choose you over others in this field? Bal Gill: What makes Balfort Legal different and how the gap in the market is filled is because the consultants visit clients in the comfort of their home. They are not having to sit in offices when discussing personal information. Clients are also able to book appointments directly via the website with the consultant. Due to COVID-19 we are conducting telephone consultations and video calls. Great Companies: What are the struggles and challenges you face? Bal Gill: Like all start-up businesses, at first it's a challenging time to create company awareness and marketing effectively. You have to ensure your competitive within the industry as well as fulfil client expectations for repeat custom and recommendation. Due to the COVID-19 outbreak and having to work remotely, we have implemented telephone consultations and video chats before the planned time to accommodate. This was a challenging time as we still had a duty to provide for our clients. We turned this over in 2 weeks though it wasn't something we had planned to do for another 6-9 months. Great Companies: What do you think are the few main things which are most important for a successful business? Bal Gill: Having a business plan, a strategy and ambition are key when starting a business. It helps you maintain business focus, defines your goals and the steps needed to achieve them. Marketing is the driving force for a business. With the use of social media and other marketing material, you must have a constant flow of leads that will keep you in the public eye. Revenue and creating sales is the key element to a business’s finance and success, but none of this is achievable without the hard work and dedication of the team within in company.

- Gurpreet Singh & Supreet Bhalla - Founder of The Catmint
Great Companies: Please tell me something about the business and how did you come up with such an idea? Gurpreet Singh & Supreet Bhalla: I was just an ordinary married woman. I used to work 24*7 because I was a home maker with no weekly offs and no salary (laughs). I always used to observe my husband working hard and often getting stressed. One fine day on our dinner table my husband laughed and said “Why can’t we have some easy solutions to fight stress in our day to day life?” That was the turning point when we actually conceived the idea of The Catmint. We asked ourselves, what if a face wash is made that not only makes you beautiful but also improves your emotional well-being. I mean what’s easier than washing you face? Initially, the idea took a lot of time to start off as it was difficult to arrange finances and an enthusiastic team which was like minded and would believe in this idea. Post that it was a year’s hard work that led us into developing 3 products that incorporated our idea of “Beauty with Emotional Wellness”. This is how “The Catmint” was born. Great Companies: What are the various services and products provided by your company? Gurpreet Singh & Supreet Bhalla: Presently, we are offering 3 products- · Dead Sea Conditioning Shampoo. · Snowflakes Body Lotion. · Dragon fruit Face Wash. Our products are available on our stand-alone website and also on Amazon. Great Companies: Why should one choose you over others in this field? Gurpreet Singh & Supreet Bhalla: We are India’s 1st Cosmetics brand that converge Beauty with Emotional Wellness. Being a 1st of its kind product range, we have ideally no competition. You might find a lot of cosmetics brands but our products are unique and innovative. Great Companies: What are the struggles and challenges you face? Gurpreet Singh & Supreet Bhalla: A business is full of challenges all day whether it be ours or anybody else’s with no exceptions. Same was the case and is the case with us. The biggest challenge we faced was how to convert the whole idea and concept of The Catmint into real life usable products. But they say, the biggest challenges turn into biggest success. If the challenge is not big enough, which means anybody can do it and you are no different. But after we faced our biggest challenge with courage, we found our biggest success – The catmint. Great Companies: What do you think are the few main things which are most important for a successful business? Gurpreet Singh & Supreet Bhalla: A successful business is no thumb rule. There are hundreds of factors involved in success or failure of any business which might or might not affect them. Let’s face this, I am not a business expert. But what we personally believe is that a founder should always work with ethics because our customers are not just customers, they are ones who trust us when the buy something from us. We should never break that trust. It’s the bond and connect between our customers and us that is for utmost importance to me. I try to provide best value proposition to my customers in terms of emotions and connections rather than sales figures, alluring discounts, profits etc.

That said, we have invested heavily in getting hourly updates from all lenders, using large database that can help locate the right lender in real time based on a person’s individual circumstances. Those that have spoken to us over the last 8 weeks have been surprised by just how easy we have made changing mortgage and the money we have saved them at this difficult time. Great Companies: What do you think are the few main things which are most important for a successful business? Mark Wisdom: A business has to be credible and place client journey at the heart of its process. In a market where clients can shop around and read reviews of business's far more easily than in the past, getting this wrong will often deter a client making contact with your firm regardless of how good you may be.
