Great Companies: How did you get your idea or concept for the business? Rupali Alankar Mhatre : I was working as a secondary school teacher till after marriage. Once we were blessed with children we decided to keep our children on top of the priority list. So working as a full time secondary teacher was out of question. However I wanted to work too. So we as a couple started brain storming on an idea which would blend both, my passion as a teacher and mother too. While we were still in the process of thinking a way out; my husband came across a friend (Shilpa) who was running a preschool of her own. She had a teacher’s requirement and I was selected for the job. Shilpa was kind enough to allow me with my children which was one of my conditions to work. This turned out to be a very good option as now I was following my passion to work as a teacher with my children around me. After working with Shilpa for a few months I learnt the traits of the business and gained a lot of confidence. When my husband provoked me to start our own Preschool I agreed in a jiffy. We (all the teachers) take care and love the children as our own, to the extent that we do not have the concept of Mavshi (the lady who is employed for cleaning and washing children after attending their natures call) in our school. Everything, right from teaching, entertaining, feeding or even cleaning/washing the children is done by the teachers and we have a very strong reason for doing so. This way teachers are 100% involved with the children throughout. Here are a few more points that make us unique. 2] “Child Sex Abuse and We” – A free training workshop conducted for parents every year. 3] “Mastering the Art of Modern Day Parenting” – Another free workshop conducted for parents every year. 4] Everything right from the bag, books, uniform, pencil, eraser, lunch box, water bottle notebooks, crayons, craft materials…. anything that is needed throughout the year is provided by the school at no additional cost. 5] Sports, Picnic, Field visits Birthday Celebrations, Festival Celebrations, and Various Competitions for children as well as for parents are also part of the curriculum. 6] While junk food is a complete no-no in the school tiffin box and a food chart is provided to the parents so that children can have a healthy and balanced diet; Friday snacks are on us. 7] Apart from the affordable academic fees that they pay; not even a single paisa extra is asked from the parents throughout the year for any reason what so ever. After the thought of starting our own preschool was finalised the biggest challenge to overcome was space. We did not have the required finance to buy or rent a commercial place. So we decided to start at home. 2] We stay on the fifth floor and the lift used to keep stopping every now and then due to electricity issues. So we (I with the help of my husband) decided to pick and drop the children from the ground floor to the fifth floor and vice versa as and when required. 3] We had no students to start with so we decided to ring each and every bell of the home in our society to identify and convince prospects. 4] Finding vendors within my small budget and requirement was a task and a lot of time, energy and efforts went in here. 5] We finally stared with four students one of them been my own younger son (Saksham). Today with the kind of image and position that Tender Wonder Preschool has created for itself in the last 8 years it is a much smoother road to run. One challenge is on-going though……Managing my own growing children, their increasing demands and managing my home along with the school (Not to forget I am a mother and wife too) – I take pride in calling myself a home maker along with been called a teacher, principle or owner of a popular school) Great Companies: How do you plan to grow in the future? Great Companies: How did you get your idea or concept for the business? Dishant Gandhi: When the lockdown hit in early 2020, we realized this is going to change the education system for good. There were two imminent problems: online live classes and online assessments. The live classes market was already dominated by free products from Google, Microsoft and Zoom. On the other hand, there was no go-to assessment platform. Online assessments was not a new concept that the pandemic brought to the forefront. In fact, all major competitive exams were already online even before COVID. The irony was the preparation for them was happening offline via pen-paper based tests. We researched this space further to figure out 3 major pain points: Product experience: Most of the products that were popular, were not very easy to use. Pricing: In the era where it takes only Rs7/km to reach Mars, online tests were priced at Rs10-50/attempt. Limited Language Support: One could only create tests in English (at max in Hindi). We decided these are the problems we want to solve. The beauty of our platform is that it can be customized to suit a specific use case that the user is trying to solve. The platform only shows what you need and nothing else and all of this can actually be done by the end-user themselves. We realized that it's the test creators that will make or break our platform and which is why we have ensured that their experience is as smooth as possible. A big differentiator is also our pricing model which works on a pay-as-you-use model rather than a typical per-user pricing model that most of the edtech SaaS platforms have. Not just that we also help save 90% of costs over existing solutions. Our typical per attempt cost starts at just Re1. Dishant Gandhi: We started Gradeazy back in 2018, with the idea to digitize the offline exams in a way that would help students take better data-driven decisions. Unfortunately, after almost a year of trying, we weren't able to achieve product-market-fit. And we eventually decided to shelve our first product. Currently, Gradeazy (or as we internally call it Gradeazy 2.0) is our second attempt at entrepreneurship, trying to learn from our past mistakes, making new ones and hopefully making better choices this time. Great Companies: How do you plan to grow in the future? What does 5 years down the line look like for Gradeazy? Dishant Gandhi: We have been successful at building an amazing product that our users in India love. We want to get the same love from across the globe. Interestingly we have some users here who were using products from Australia, Sweden and US and have transitioned to Gradeazy to never look at them again. The founding team also comes from a blue-collar recruitment background and understands the space and problems in the space really well. We believe that our platform can revolutionize the space for good. We are already in beta testing with our product for hiring. We will be going live in a couple of weeks. I was a mediocre copywriter not getting anywhere in advertising. So I quit. The only thing to do after advertising is Films. And I was desperate to come back to Mumbai from Hyderabad where I was then working. So that was the idea. I recently read this book ‘Built to Last : Successful Habits of Visionary Companies’ by James C. Collins and Jerry I. Porras. ‘Built to Last’ is an examination of 18 visionary companies and 18 other companies which are great too, but not as great as the visionary companies. Quoting directly from ‘Built to Last’ by Collins and Porras: Myth 1: It takes a great idea to start a great company. Reality: Starting a company with a “great idea” might be a bad idea. Few of the visionary companies began life with a great idea. In fact, some began life without any specific idea and a few even life without any specific idea and a few even began with outright failures. I've acquired a sense of content relative to budgets, or a sense of budgets relative to content. E.g. most films of Alfred Hitchcock, at today's costs, can be made inside Rs 20 lakhs or $30,000. With Films | TV | Advertising | VR AR MR | Events under one roof, you can expect humongous activity at Eye-Q Films. (Yes, there are 6 names in our list of Big 5 Studios. Suuresh Ramachandran : The most important career decision - in fact, I’d go so far as to say that this is not just the most important career decision, this is the possibly the most important life decision. It’s as follows: By the time you are 17 or 18, or at least 21-22 years of age, you must decide whether: You want a fixed regular monthly remuneration. Or You are comfortable with irregular income. If you don’t take this decision properly, I fear and caution that you could keep going from one thing to another all your life. The big decision is not whether you want to be a lawyer, for example. Sunit Kumar: While preparing for IITs, I used to ponder over how teachers should be using the new age technology to make learning more engaging and interesting for students. After completing my engineering and working with various software MNCs, interacting with my colleagues in the office and observing them I realised that something seriously needs to be done to change the whole teaching and learning process. This led to the idea of being an edupreneur. Platform to learn GK, Logical Reasoning etc. Five years down the line we look to be one of the leading EdTech companies. We would also launch online counselling for students to fight depression and work on mental health. Online counselling for subject choice throughout the world. Sunit Kumar: Start early as soon as you pass out from college or high school. Start planning while studying with like minded fellow students, best teams are made in the college only. As you grow old the responsibilities start mounting on you and it becomes difficult to bring like minded people together on one platform.
