  • Devesh Chawla, Founder & CEO at Chatur Ideas

Great Companies: How did you get your idea or concept for the business? It all began with Devesh Chawla’s idea to start a cab service based on GPS. He had created a working model and reached out to various industry experts, however, he was discouraged from pursuing the idea. Devesh took their words to not further work on the idea as it needed political connections and managing unions, according to his mentors. He dropped the idea and started working with a firm as a wealth manager and was responsible for managing ultra-HNI’s money, who invested in India and abroad across asset classes. Through this experience, Devesh acquired a huge amount of networking and domain expertise. He used to spend a lot of time mentoring startups and investing in them, connecting with investors and gained a lot of experience and exposure. However, simultaneously, he also saw Ola’s birth and their journey to the 1000-crore club on the footholds of the same idea, he had initiated in 2009. It turned out to be an eye-opener for Devesh and he therefore decided to bridge this gap between entrepreneurs and investors/mentors by providing a platform for their interactions and valuable feedback from these dignitaries to these entrepreneurs to help them with their journey. Thus, took place the establishment of Chatur Ideas – one of India’s leading startup enabler platforms that helps young entrepreneurs across the country to lead and guide them through their entrepreneurship journey. Chatur Ideas also conducts Entrepreneurship Development workshops along with mentoring sessions in top business schools and colleges across India. Great Companies: What are the various services provided by Chatur Ideas Fundraising Having a strong investor network of more than 1500 investors, we assist startups with fundraise from Post-Seed Investment rounds to Series A. B, C and so on. The startups we select are curated by an investment committee composed of Top CXOs from Google, JP Morgan, etc which enriches the whole process. Mentoring We offer domain specific mentoring from top technical experts in the specific field to ensure quality output is achieved through the support from the mentor/advisor Financial Independence Programs Programs based on financial independence to ensure the capability of the future generation to take care of their own finances. This may be through stock market, entrepreneurship or career counseling. Acquisition of 'Nurture Talent Academy' (India's first institute for Entrepreneurs) has allowed Chatur Ideas to train young entrepreneurs across Institutes and provide them access to our vast ecosystem to enrich them in the entrepreneurship culture right from the foundation level. We have trained more than 50,000+ students from institutions across 125+ cities Consulting We assist companies/family offices with strategies/plans to expand their businesses or increase revenue streams through partnerships with members of our Chatur Ideas Community Great Companies: What makes Chatur Ideas different from hundreds of other similar service providers? Any industry in today’s time cannot run without competitors since it only makes our own company stand out of the rest and clients do understand the value given to them. Chatur Ideas is better because we give customized service to each client and the value given is purely in terms of capability and efficiency of startups which is directly proportional to current market demand and expectations. Great Companies: What were the struggles and challenges you faced and how did you overcome them? One of the biggest challenges that I personally faced was acceptance. I was not sure if people would accept me, as there were already bigger players in the market, doing things similar to our business idea, and even they were facing tough times. I was not sure, being so young, entering an already competitive field, if I would be able to achieve what I wanted and if the market would respond to it in a positive way. To overcome that, I got into it and gave my 100%. I stepped out of my comfort zone, spent more than 18 hours a day on the start-up, making sure that I put all the pieces together to get the benefits of the mentors and the investors. Eventually, the hard work paid off, people started seeing the sincerity and honesty in my work, often foregoing the revenue in it and thinking of the bigger picture. This is how I overcame this challenge and Chatur Ideas was able to rise up rapidly. Great Companies: How do you plan to grow in the future? What are 5 years down the line Chatur Ideas? As one of India’s largest startup enabling platforms, our goal is to further grow globally. USA, Israel, UAE, Qatar are just a few of the countries we have an international presence in. We aim to expand our presence internationally as we continue to grow. The most important goal would be to help 50 startups reach unicorn status. Great Companies: If you had one piece of advice to someone just starting out, what would it be? My tips to first time and aspiring entrepreneurs includes doing an empathy study and in-depth market survey to figure out and answer one major question, "what problem is an entrepreneur solving?" Most of the first time entrepreneurs first find the solution and then look for the problem. This should be the other way around, they should look for the problem first, and then find the solution. Just finding the solution is not enough, the solution should be very enticing, have should have the potential to create money and solve problems at the same time. These are the pointers which first time and aspiring entrepreneurs should keep in mind.

  • Raunak Chhabra, Editor-in-Chief at EditingCorp

Great Companies: How did you get your idea or concept for the business? Raunak Chhabra: Creativity has always been a big part of my life. As long as I can remember, I have always been writing, designing websites, taking pictures, and making short films. It became an amazing outlet for me, growing up and going through different things. EditingCorp started from my passion for design and creativity. I had a photographer friend back in 2013 who wanted to learn the technique of isolating a single color in an image while turning the entire image black and white. To help him out, I set up a small blog and published an extensive and detailed written tutorial on the topic. Little did I know about the great amount of organic traffic I would be gaining over the next 2 months. This little success gave me the itch to build something - An online resource focused entirely on creating valuable and useful content for designers, editors, and photographers. What started as a standalone blog has now grown into a community of more than 2.5 million users from all around the world. Great Companies: What are the various services provided by EditingCorp Raunak Chhabra: From useful creative how-tos and tutorials to design inspiration and freebies, EditingCorp has everything that designers, editors, and photographers look for. We share insightful tutorials and time-saving techniques, pre-made templates and projects, as well as articles on the latest and most innovative design resources that our readers can benefit from. EditingCorp targets Graphic designers, Web & Mobile designers, Filmmakers, Photographers, Video Editors, and Bloggers. This audience is always eager to discover more about the tips, tools, and services that will help improve their work and make their job easier—which is why we’re dedicated to providing them with the latest and greatest information on the web. Great Companies: What makes EditingCorp different from hundreds of other similar service providers? Raunak Chhabra: The number one thing that makes EditingCorp stand out from its competitors is our focus on creating high-quality content and digital products absolutely free of cost. Most of our products are free to download and use for personal and commercial purposes. At EditingCorp, we believe that money is only the byproduct of what we do and how we do it. If our work is unique, high-quality, and consistent, the money will tag along. Every 6 months, our entire content library goes through a quality check and audits to filter out dead and underperforming content. We then take necessary actions either by removing or updating the content to match current trends to ensure quality and consistency throughout the entire website. Great Companies: What were the struggles and challenges you faced and how did you overcome them? Raunak Chhabra: EditingCorp started from my passion for creativity but a passion cannot sustain your living. The worst part is that the return on investment took quite a lot of time. While hard work and creativity came purely from the heart, one cannot eat or live without money. Success requires persistence but creating and uploading new content every week is honestly hard sometimes. Finding ideas and developing those ideas is hard. Writing a post, editing it, adding pictures, and promoting it is a long and hard process. Even if I had all the time in the world, being consistent is always hard, it takes discipline. A discipline that I am still learning. I don’t think we could ever overcome such issues, which I believe is a good thing on its own as a business without struggles and challenges could never grow. Great Companies: How do you plan to grow in the future? What does 5 years down the line look like for EditingCorp? Raunak Chhabra: EditingCorp will soon turn 10 years old. While we don’t really believe in having a next 5-year plan, all I know is we’ll stick to our mission of creating and publishing great content year after year. I would also love to dedicate more time to my passion for Wildlife Photography and contribute to the protection and conservation of endangered wildlife species. Great Companies: If you had one piece of advice to someone just starting out, what would it be? Raunak Chhabra:“Just focus on one thing at a time and say “NO” more often to ideas that did not support your goals. Time is too valuable to waste on things that won’t take you anywhere. Treat and grow your creation, no matter how small it is, like a real business no matter what people tell you”.

  • Sunil Haridas, Founder & CEO at Pradjna Intellisys

Great Companies: How did you get your idea or concept for the business? Sunil Haridas: I have been conscious of the fact that India has always placed a premium on White Collar employment. Blue Collar skills and competencies have historically take a back seat in the country. But Blue Collar skills are the back bone of any industrial nation and currently India is aspiring for a significant manufacturing pie both for domestic market and exports. Hence there is an unmet need to evaluate the Blue Collar competencies objectively and scientifically and assess its impact on safety, productivity, product quality and resource/material usage. It is also important to note in this context that India has among the highest number of road accident related mortalities (>150,000 last year) in the world. Also significant are mortalities in Industrial accidents (>6000 recently) in India. Also there is hardly any relevant data available in India correlating Blue collar skills with industrial and service productivity, quality and material usage. These are some of the major reason that inspired us to choose this startup idea. Great Companies: What are the various services provided by Pradjna Intellisys Sunil Haridas: Pradjna is one of its kind platform globally, to evaluate Blue Collar worker skills and assess the impact of their performance on safety (road, industrial), productivity, product quality and resource/material usage. Currently these skills and worker performance are evaluated by subject matter experts (SMEs) in the respective fields. But this model is subjective, likely to be biased, expensive and not scalable. Our data driven solution for connected workers is not only 100% objective but it is also cost effective, secure, scalable and always available. Our first product Pradjna Driver Analyser (PDA) is specifically designed to collect behaviour biometric data of drivers and analyse it from a risk, cost and performance (passenger comfort, productivity) perspective. PDA also offers features to identify risky behaviour like drowsiness, extended use of phones while driving. We can also provide accident related alerts and can notify preset contacts including first responders, police and supervisors/relatives. We are currently getting our second product Pradjna Welder Analyser (PWA) market ready and which is also the first offering for the manufacturing blue collar segment. PWA offers a unique solution to evaluate the safety, productivity, quality and material usage of industrial welders using a haptic based sensor suite and proprietary machine learning platform. We are developing similar performance management tools for other manufacturing blue collar skills like machining and industrial painting. We are also looking to develop wearable devices for assessing motor skills like sports in the future. Great Companies: What makes Pradjna Intellisys different from hundreds of other similar service providers? Sunil Haridas: We are an revolutionary HRTech product/platform company and not a IT service provider. Below are the significant differentiators of Pradjna. Key innovations : (1) First to develop an advanced Behavioral Biometrics suite to provide solutions across a number of business use cases for Financial services, Logistics, Education and skills and Industry 4.0 - Manufacturing (2) Among the few start-ups globally to use innovative Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) framework of machine learning. Our AGI framework is logically similar to the neo-cortex of the human brain. It is generic enough to analyse data sourced from different work contexts. (3) Pradjna leverages sensor fusion - software, software + hardware devices, IoTs. 3G/4G/5G compatible. (4) Offers low latency and high bandwidth. Scalable, secure, GDPR & SOC2 compliant, Cloud based B2B enterprise solution. Easy to use, upgrade and support internationally. Competition Analysis Matrix Great Companies: What were the struggles and challenges you faced and how did you overcome them? Sunil Haridas: Customer Connects - We provide a niche B2B Enterprise product, getting access to appropriate C-suite executives & business line owners in insurance, manufacturing has been a challenge especially during the last 2 years due to CoVID pandemic and related disruptions. Post CoVID we are working closely with stake holder and ecosystem players to get the right connects with potential customers. We also leverage professional networks like LinkedIn to connect and engage with customers. Investor Connects - Ours is a unique product which is slightly ahead of the technology adoption curve in India and south Asia. Investors in Indian Startup ecosystem have been largely risk averse and have followed proven western business models in eCommerce and Aggregation (Financial,Taxi, Travel etc). Hence getting significant investment into the company has been a challenge. We have been recipient of some of the Government of India grants. We have also received funding from Shell India as part of Shell E4 digital cohort 2021. Resources & Skills : Good resources with high end skills like Machine Learning and Big Data Analytics are scarce to find in tier 2 cities in India. As a solution we have spend significant time and effort to train locally available resources, build these skills and competencies in-house. Great Companies: How do you plan to grow in the future? What does 5 years down the line look like for Pradjna Intellisys? Sunil Haridas: Following are some of our planned and executed milestones going forward to the next 4-5 years. Milestone 1: Pradjna V 1.2 release with initial B2B user customisations (T +180days ). Seed Funding funding - round 2 closure Milestone 2: Complete 10,000 annual end user Blue Collar assessments (T + 540 days ). Commercial Release of Pradjna Welder Analyser (PWA). Pre-Series A funding Milestone 3: Pradjna V 2.0 major release with leading HRMS enterprise integration (T + 900 days ). Pradjna Painter Analyser (PPA) and Pradjna Machinist Analyser (PMA) are commercially available. Series A funding Milestone 4: 500,000 annual end user assessments completed for the year ( T + 1280 days ). Presence in advanced industrial markets in US, EU , South Korea, Japan * T is the Pradjna V 1.1 baseline release completed in Sept 2021 Great Companies: If you had one piece of advice to someone just starting out, what would it be? Sunil Haridas: Being an entrepreneur is often seen as a glamorous and lucrative today. But anyone starting up should look at the rigorous and often lonely struggle most startup founders need to go through. Few have been lucky and their ideas have been well timed and well received in the market. But for 90 percent of the founders that has not been the case. Hence lot of home work and due diligence is mandatory before you finalise on any idea however interesting that may look initially. Also most important thing is to bounce the idea with a number of potential users and get feedback to refine it through multiple iterations before investing your long term time, effort and money.

  • Erkki Markus, Founder and CEO at Smaily

Great Companies: How did you get your idea or concept for the business? Erkki: We saw that personalized marketing is going to be the next big thing. We already knew that email is the best marketing tool to drive new sales, as it is the most valuable owned media channel and probably the only channel that you can track 1:1 and build additional business or marketing logic on. Thus, we started a small spin-off as an experiment next to a web agency we were running at that time. The experiment gradually grew bigger than the parent company, and we decided to split with it and started Smaily. Thanks to good timing, a great team, and keeping an eye on the market and listening to our clients, we have grown into one of the biggest service providers in Scandinavia. We saw that personalized marketing is going to be the next big thing. We already knew that email is the best marketing tool to drive new sales, as it is the most valuable owned media channel and probably the only channel that you can track 1:1 and build Great Companies: What makes Smaily different from hundreds of other similar service providers? Erkki: What differentiates us from the competition is truly focusing on the client. We provide software that is intentionally easy to use yet, thanks to flexible architecture, not lacking any of the more advanced functionalities that other such software has. We have live chat, Skype, and phone support even for our Freemium clients. We have simple pricing, and our free users can also enjoy all of our features. At the beginning of next year, we are going to launch a unique Apps feature that takes away the burden of integrating systems with each other – everything will be handled automatically under the hood of Smaily. Great Companies: What are the various services provided by Smaily? Erkki: In addition to an email marketing tool, we also offer agency services (which make up about 20% of our revenue). This is targeted at those customers who can’t or do not want to be marketing directors, specialists, and template wizards themselves but want to focus on their own job and let the pros do all the heavy lifting. With these services, we offer them everything from strategy and integrations to content and design, etc. And on top of that, we are also a great technical partner for web, advertising, and online agencies. Great Companies: What were the struggles and challenges you faced, and how did you overcome them? Erkki: Staff. It takes a lot of effort to find people who drive through their everyday challenges passionately and who really want to make a difference. Such people are usually not motivated by perks but rather by leadership, their teammates, and the results of their efforts. If you want to create something big, it is inevitable to find people with the same mindset as you. Otherwise, you will fail hard. Fortunately, over the years, these like-minded people have joined Smaily, and today we have a strong team of 18 people, working dedicatedly towards a common goal and otherwise enjoying the company (of colleagues). Great Companies: How do you plan to grow in the future? What do the next 5 years along the line look like for Smaily? Erkki: Our main effort has been to get more export revenue. Today we are in the top 3 in Scandinavia, then again, this is a small market. Currently, we are focusing on getting more inbound traffic from all over the world while also launching some long-time-in-the-makes kick-a$$ features. In 5 years, we strive to be one of the biggest ESPs in the EU market focused on SMEs. Great Companies: If you had one piece of advice for someone just starting out, what would it be? Erkki: Do what you love, and you cannot fail.
