Since 2016, Kayla Daily has been building The Cat’s Meow Entertainment around a simple idea: great wedding entertainment should do more than play songs—it should create an experience. Today, her all-female DJ team serves couples across West Virginia and parts of Kentucky and Ohio.

Building a Different Kind of DJ Company

A wedding DJ can easily be viewed as the person behind the booth choosing the next song.

For Kayla Daily, that definition is far too narrow.

Since launching The Cat’s Meow Entertainment in 2016, Daily has built the Barboursville-based company around the idea that wedding entertainment should help orchestrate the entire atmosphere of a celebration—from music and lighting to timelines, announcements and keeping guests engaged on the dance floor.

The business has since grown into an all-female DJ trifecta, serving weddings and events throughout West Virginia as well as parts of Kentucky and Ohio.

Its track record has followed that growth. The Cat’s Meow has been named Best DJ Company in West Virginia by WV Wedding Magazine for five consecutive years, from 2021 through 2025, and was also recognised as Best Photo Booth in 2023.

But the company's differentiation isn't simply that its DJs are women.

It is how that team has turned its identity, energy and attention to detail into a distinctive customer experience.

From Starting From Scratch to Building a Team

Starting an event entertainment company meant Daily had to learn far more than how to DJ.

In the early stages, she was effectively responsible for every part of the business—marketing, equipment technology, event planning and customer service, while also learning from every event that did not go exactly as planned.

The challenge was amplified by entering a market where being an all-female DJ company was unusual.

“There were a lot of proving who we are and what we bring to the team,” Daily says of the journey.

Instead of treating that as a limitation, she focused on consistency, reinvesting in the business and creating memorable experiences for clients.

That approach eventually helped turn an initially unconventional proposition into an established brand.

Today, Daily leads the company as Owner, Content Creator and Lead DJ, alongside DJs Ashley Brown and Dee Jenkins.

The Business Is Built Around the Experience

The Cat’s Meow does not position itself as a simple “press play” DJ service.

The company describes its role as orchestrating lighting, visuals, vendors, DJs and music to make a wedding flow from one moment to the next.

That can include DJ and MC services, custom mixes, wireless microphones, uplighting, dance-floor lighting, monogram lighting, photo booths, audio guestbooks, karaoke and even live musicians when available.

The goal is not to make every wedding look the same.

In fact, the company takes the opposite approach.

Daily and her team spend time understanding each couple—their style, vision and guests—and then customise the entertainment around that.

The company currently DJs between 80 and 90 weddings and events each year, with experience ranging from weddings and corporate events to reunions, private parties and larger celebrations.

Its experience also extends across cultures, including Indian baraats, Hispanic and Polish traditions.

Technology That Takes the Stress Out of Planning

One of the company's more distinctive business decisions has been its investment in technology.

The Cat’s Meow offers a DJ Planning App that gives clients a central place to communicate their preferences, select songs and build their event plans over time.

That matters because wedding planning can quickly become overwhelming.

Rather than asking couples to answer every entertainment question in a single sitting, the platform allows them to work through their plans gradually and on their own schedule.

Behind the scenes, the system also helps communicate client requirements to the DJ and other vendors through a shared dashboard.

For Daily, technology isn't there simply because it looks modern. It solves a practical customer problem: making a complicated planning process feel more manageable.

Turning a DJ Into a Party Experience

Music selection is only part of the job.

The Cat’s Meow team describes its DJs as party motivators, with an emphasis on creating an environment where guests of different ages and backgrounds feel comfortable joining the celebration.

Custom mixing is another part of that philosophy.

Rather than automatically playing every song from beginning to end, the team creates mixes and adjusts the flow according to the room.

Guests can also submit song requests through a QR code, while the team reviews those requests before deciding whether they fit the couple's vision for the dance floor.

That combination of technology, planning and human judgement is what turns the company's service from equipment rental and music playback into a more complete entertainment experience.

The Lessons Behind the Growth

Daily's journey has not been without mistakes or difficult moments.

Building from scratch required her to become comfortable with responsibilities she had never handled before. Equipment problems, event challenges, marketing demands and customer expectations all became part of the learning curve.

But she believes each event provided another lesson.

Her strategy was straightforward: stay consistent, invest back into the business and keep improving the client experience.

That mindset helped transform early challenges into the foundation for the company she runs today.

It also shaped her advice to other women considering entrepreneurship.

Start Before You Feel Ready

Daily does not believe entrepreneurs need to know everything before they begin.

Her advice is to start before you feel ready, surround yourself with supportive people, ask questions and continue learning.

Confidence, she says, grows through action rather than perfection.

That philosophy mirrors her own journey.

The Cat’s Meow began with Daily building a business from scratch in an industry where she had to establish credibility and prove what an all-female team could deliver. Today, the company has an established team, a technology-driven planning process, a broad entertainment offering and a five-year run of recognition as West Virginia's Best DJ Company.

For Daily, however, the goal remains remarkably simple.

A wedding happens once. There are no do-overs.

The job of The Cat’s Meow Entertainment is to make sure the music, lighting, energy and details come together so that, when the formalities are over, the only thing left for the couple and their guests to do is celebrate.
