Lynne McDonald, Founder at Lynne McDonald Galleries

Great Companies : How did you get your idea or concept for the business?

Lynne McDonald : Before I ever picked up a paintbrush, I had a nagging image in my mind, urging me towards the art supply store. I could not shake it. Finally, in 2005, I took the plunge and painted my very first piece. I was pleased with it, but thought it was beginner's luck and decided to quit while I was ahead. I moved to Montreal, where I started a family, and I did not paint again for almost a decade.

It wasn’t until my life turned upside down that I returned to Atlanta with my young son, unemployed, going through a divorce, and broken from my shattered dreams.  I felt the need to express myself in my darkest moments, and painting became my therapy.  It was a way to heal and let go. In my studio, I found purpose and presence. Each brushstroke felt like a magical dance of emotion. Painting taught me resilience and grace in navigating life's ups and downs.

Sharing my creations with others, I was surprised by the support and interest they garnered. With gratitude, I embraced each opportunity that came my way, saying "yes" to my artistic journey. Supported by my community, I found strength and hope for a brighter future.

Great Companies : What are the various services provided by Lynne McDonald?

Lynne McDonald : As an international abstract artist. I specialize in creating dynamic acrylic paintings on canvas. Each piece is meticulously crafted to make a statement to enhance the ambiance of a home or commercial space. Whether customers are drawn to a piece from my existing collection or envision a custom creation, I'm here to bring your artistic desires to life. In my creative process, I use a variety of mediums to achieve the desired viscosity and texture, resulting in a dynamic interplay of colors and forms. By guiding the paints as they flow across the canvas, I create compositions that spark the imagination. My work is exhibited at Serendipity Labs in Atlanta, Georgia.

Great Companies : What makes Lynne McDonald different from hundreds of other similar service providers?

Lynne McDonald : What sets me apart from other artists is my deeply personal approach to my craft. I don't measure success by technical skill; it's about the emotional connection my work sparks with viewers. In my studio, authenticity and vulnerability are my guiding principles. Each piece I create is infused with my innermost emotions, reflecting my journey and beliefs. I have a preference for crafting large-scale pieces, which may be unconventional, but I believe in the power of making bold statements through art. At midlife, I found myself at a crossroads.  I took a leap and created the life I truly desired. By embracing authenticity and seizing new opportunities, I've transformed my life. Now, I'm driven to inspire others to do the same. I firmly believe that everyone deserves to pursue their dream life. Through my art, I aim to be a source of encouragement for others to embrace life fully and boldly chase after their aspirations.

Great Companies : What were the struggles and challenges you faced, and how did you overcome them?

Lynne McDonald : I've defied stereotypes, shattered expectations, and navigated obstacles with determination. In January 2020, I plunged into the art world as a single mother in my fifties, lacking formal training, but fueled by a newfound passion for painting. Despite initial challenges, I began scheduling shows throughout the year. However, the onset of the pandemic in mid-March disrupted all plans, forcing us into confinement. Faced with the need to adapt swiftly, I seized the opportunity to live-stream art shows from my home—a decision that proved transformative. Now, with hundreds of paintings sold worldwide and recognition in respected publications like Simply Buckhead and Best Self magazines, my work has been celebrated. I was also fortunate enough to win the "Over 40 and Fabulous" contest in the 2018 issue, earned the title of a “juried” artist, won numerous awards, and showcased my work in 15 solo exhibitions.

Great Companies : How do you plan to grow in the future? What does 5 years down the line look like for Lynne McDonald?

Lynne McDonald : Looking ahead to the next five years, I have two main goals: first, to create more work and increase the number of solo and partner shows in Atlanta and other exciting locations like Seaside, Miami, and Dubai; second, to collaborate with celebrities and influencers, taking advantage of Atlanta's growing reputation in cinema and fashion. Ultimately, I want to keep chasing my dreams and inspiring women to live fulfilling lives.

Great Companies : If you had one piece of advice to someone just starting out, what would it be?

Lynne McDonald : Stay true to yourself. You deserve happiness, so focus on finding supportive people and pursue what brings you joy.
