What challenges have you overcome to reach where you are now
Having worked in the global tech industry, my kind (Indian woman leader) was severely under represented. I spent my early years really trying to blend in, wearing clothes and saying things that others' would. In fact, I would go so far as to say that my goal was to not stand out, suppress my ethnicity and views that were different. I spent time learning about topics I didn't care about just so I could have a conversation with my colleagues and blend in. As one would imagine, it is really hard to be someone you really aren't, starts irroding your confidence and your sense of self. A wonderful mentor helped me realise this when he asked me what I, Deepa thought and not what I thought I should say. I realised that I needed to bring my whole self to work - my ethnicity, my diverse perspective and be vulnerable enough to have my views or thoughts be critiqued.
What message you want to give for other aspiring women entrepreneurs
Entrpreneurship is often a lonely path, you are working on things that don't have much precedence and hence vague without the benefit of hindsight. However, it gives you an opportunity to paint your own canvas, your way within rules that you make for yourself. Give it a try, it is extremely satisfying & liberating regardless of whether your ideas is successful or not.
